Do I Really Need SPF Indoors? Yes, Here's Why

With the sun beaming and our calendars light on travel, many of us are spending more time in our backyards, at our desks, or inside catching up on our favorite shows. You may be wondering: if I’m not out sunbathing, do I still need sunscreen? Short answer? Yes. Absolutely. Every single day. Let’s break down why your skin still needs protection indoors — and how to do it right.
UVA, UVB, and the Light You Can't See
When we think of sunburns, we think UVB rays. These rays burn the outer layers of the skin and are strongest from late spring through early fall. But it’s the UVA rays — the aging rays — that stick around all year. They penetrate clouds, windows, and even some clothing. They don’t cause visible sunburn, but they break down collagen, cause fine lines, pigmentation, and yes — contribute to skin cancer.
Now enter HEV light (High-Energy Visible light), also known as blue light. This light comes from the sun, but also from screens, LED lights, and our ever-present tech. Studies show HEV light can trigger pigmentation and oxidative stress — making it a stealthy skin saboteur.
Why SPF Indoors Still Matters
You may not be at the beach, but if you’re near a window or glued to a screen, your skin is getting light exposure. This is why I say: SPF 365, even on Christmas morning.Your sunscreen should protect against: UVA UVB HEV/Blue light Infrared (heat-related stress)
Our Favorite Indoors + Outdoors SPF
Skin Evolved Everyday Mineral SPF Zinc oxide-based Tinted (no ghostly white cast) No flashback on Zoom Non-comedogenic Broad-spectrum and HEV-blocking
How to apply: Tap (don’t rub!) a half teaspoon over your AM serums. Reapply every few hours if you’re near windows or screens.
Bonus Blue Light Defense
Blue-light blocking glasses (like Ambr Eyewear) — protect your eyes and reduce fatigue. Antioxidant serums + vitamin-rich foods — combat light-induced oxidative stress. Night mode or screen filters — bonus points for improving your sleep cycle, too.
